Xero™ bank statement import failed: check your sheet first

By Paul Kemp · Published

Xero™ is strict about the bank statements it accepts, and its error messages point at the file, not the fix. Before retrying an import, check the sheet itself: most failures come from a small set of causes.

The usual causes

Check by hand

  1. Read Xero™'s error message and go to the row it names. The fault is usually on that row or the one above it.
  2. Check the date column is one consistent, real-date format throughout.
  3. Check every amount cell holds a number (=ISNUMBER() never lies).
  4. Remove blank rows inside the data and anything below the last transaction.
About two minutes on a real sheet. The full walkthrough is on YouTube.

Validate before you upload

Import Cleaner for Xero checks an upload file before it goes near Xero™: dates, amounts, references and the contact names that would silently create duplicates. The full scan, every explanation and Undo are free, and your data stays in your Google™ account.
