Someone sorted one column: how to find and fix it in Google Sheets™
It is the most dreaded accident in shared sheets: someone sorts column A to find a name, clicks the wrong option, and only that column moves. Every name now sits beside the wrong row, there is no warning, and the file saves itself. Here is how to spot it and recover.
How to tell it happened
- Names no longer match the details beside them, but each column looks plausibly sorted on its own.
- Totals still add up (sorting changes order, not values), so no formula complains.
- If you suspect it, check File → Version history → See version history and compare with yesterday's version before touching anything.
Fix it
- Open File → Version history → See version history.
- Find the last version before the sort. Google Sheets™ timestamps each change.
- Either restore that version (if nothing else changed since) or copy the affected columns from the old version into the current one.
- Do not try to un-sort by hand. A manual re-sort of thousands of rows cannot be verified.
Prevent it
- Use filter views for personal sorting: they never move anyone else's rows.
- Protect the key column so only keepers can sort the sheet.
- Sort with Data → Sort range and the "data has header row" box ticked, selecting all columns every time.
Check for sort damage
Shared Sheet Guardrails™ checks a Google Sheets™ file for rows sorted out of line, typed-over formulas, lost validation and the rest. Checking any sheet is free.
