Why Gemini™ in Google Sheets™ gives wrong answers

By Paul Kemp · Published

Ask Gemini™ in Google Sheets™ for a total and get a confident wrong number, and the model is rarely the problem. It read your sheet the way it is, and sheets built for human eyes are full of things that mislead a reader that takes every cell literally.

What AI trips over

The usual suspects, in rough order of damage:

Check by hand

  1. Unmerge every merged cell (Format → Merge cells → Unmerge) and keep one header row.
  2. Delete banner rows above the headers, or move the title into the tab name.
  3. Close blank rows and columns inside the data block.
  4. Spot-check suspect columns with =ISNUMBER(A2) copied down. Anything FALSE needs converting to a real number.
  5. Move totals below a blank row, or label the row clearly.
About two minutes on a real sheet. The full walkthrough is on YouTube.

Score the whole sheet at once

AI Readiness Scanner and Fixer™ scores a Google Sheets™ file out of 100 for AI readability and explains every finding, so you can see exactly why an AI misreads it. Scanning, the score, every explanation and Undo are free.
