Etsy, eBay and Vinted report your sales to HMRC: the 30 sales and €2,000 rule
UK online platforms send HMRC a report on their sellers every January, and give each seller a copy. This page sets out who is reported, what the report holds, why its figures won't match your tax year, and how to check it against your own files. Each point links to the GOV.UK page it comes from.
This is a summary of published rules, not tax advice. Being reported, or not, does not settle whether you are trading. If you're not sure, read HMRC's guidance or ask an accountant. Checked against GOV.UK on 23 September 2026.
Who is reported
Since 1 January 2024, UK online platforms have had to report sellers' details and income to HMRC. (Selling goods or services on a digital platform)
- Left out: a seller who, on that platform, makes fewer than 30 sales of goods in a calendar year and receives less than €2,000 (about £1,700) for them.
- Reported: a seller who reaches either figure. 30 sales of £2 each is enough; so is one sale of £1,800.
- Per platform. The limits apply to each platform on its own. 20 sales on Etsy™ and 20 on Vinted™ means neither reports you on the count.
- Services are reported whatever the amount; the limits are for selling goods.
When, and what you get
- Platforms report by calendar year (1 January to 31 December), to HMRC by 31 January of the next year. Sales made in 2026 are reported by 31 January 2027. (Submit your digital platform report)
- The platform must give you a copy of what it reported, by the same deadline. How it reaches you is up to the platform.
- The report holds your full name, home address, date of birth and National Insurance number, and the total you earned on the platform in the year, less the fees, commission and taxes it deducted, split into quarters.
Being reported is not a tax bill
HMRC says a platform reporting your details does not by itself mean any tax is due. What matters is whether you are trading and how much you made. HMRC's guidance says that if you are selling your own personal possessions, such as clearing out a wardrobe, you probably do not have to pay Income Tax on them; if you sell things you made, or bought intending to sell for a profit, you are probably trading. Gross trading income of £1,000 or less in a tax year is covered by the trading allowance. (Check if you need to tell HMRC about your income from online platforms, Tax-free allowances on property and trading income)
Why the report won't match your own figures
- Different year. The report runs January to December; the tax year runs 6 April to 5 April. One report covers parts of two tax years. See tax year vs calendar year.
- Different total. The report gives what you earned less the platform's fees. The trading allowance is measured against gross trading income, before fees and expenses.
- One platform only. Each platform reports what happened on it. Your trading income counts every platform and every sale off them together.
- Refunds and timing. A sale refunded in a later month, or paid out after 31 December, can land in a different period in your records from the platform's.
Checking the copy against your own files
- Download the year's files from each platform: Etsy's monthly statements, eBay™'s transaction report, Vinted's sales history. The Etsy, eBay and Vinted pages say where.
- For each platform, add up the number of sales and the income for 1 January to 31 December, leaving out payouts to your bank.
- Take off the platform's fees to compare with the report's figure; keep the gross for the tax year.
- For each quarter, compare with the copy. A gap usually means a missing month, a refund or a sale counted twice.
What Seller Export Cleaner does with it
Drop the files into the sidebar. The ledger gives every sale its UK tax year, and the reporting check shows, for each platform and calendar year, how many sales you made and whether they reach 30 or €2,000, using the one euro rate stated on the tab. It never looks up an exchange rate, and it is a check against your own files, not a copy of what the platform sent. It does not decide whether you are trading or work out any tax. See the guide.
